Choosing Where to Retire

If you have your sights set on a sunny retirement, there is plenty to think through:

• Are my expectations affordable and realistic?
• Can I afford the same house in Florida I am accustomed to in Canada? Do I need the same house?
• What kind of insurance do I need?
• Am I willing to rent out my second property when not in use?

When planning to buy south of the border, find out ahead of time how you will be taxed as a non-resident. The United States may welcome you with open arms, but each state differs in its policies toward Snowbirds.

You may be part of the “Sandwich Generation”, with dependent children and parents who require your support. This can be a great barrier to heading south every winter. Will they come with you? Can they get proper health insurance and medical assistance if required? If not, are they receiving proper care back home? Will you feel guilty if you are spending significant time away?
