Using Your Time in Retirement

Leading up to retirement, you dreamed of a time when you’d be out on the links everyday. Believe it or not, golfing everyday can get old, fast.

There are plenty of ways to make the most of your long-awaited free time but now is the time to plan—sometimes situations are forced upon us before we expect it. It’s essential to have a plan before boredom, depression and lethargy set in. Planning ahead ensures your greatest challenge isn’t how to fill your time, but how to narrow down your options!

Just because you no longer hop on an airplane every week, or plan for that big meeting, doesn’t mean each day shouldn’t have a purpose. Find a part-time job in a field that has always interested you; make up for missed family time by setting regular outings with grandkids; seek out volunteer opportunities; go back to college; or start writing your memoirs.

If you want to ease into retirement, consider developing a portfolio career. Perhaps you are a lawyer with a lifelong love of woodworking. Divide your time, spending a third consulting in the legal field, a third developing a side business in woodworking, and another third sitting on the board of a charity.

And, why not consider allocating one or two hours each day to whatever you want to do: read a novel, go for a long walk, play the piano, take a hot bath. Above all, don’t feel guilty about it—after all, this is what you’ve been waiting for. But on the flip side, don’t let these indulgences take over your retirement. Find activities that give you purpose and create structure for your day.

Find out how you can make the most of your retirement. Contact us, or register for the Striding to Success Pre-Retirement Boot Camp.
