If you have a spouse or a partner, your retirement isn’t just your own. You may dream of spending weeks at a time fishing, but if your partner is prone to seasickness, you’ll need to reevaluate. Likewise, if there is a significant age gap, you may need to wait ten years before you both hit the road in a Winnebago.
Like marriage, retirement involves compromise. Align your retirement goals ahead of time, thinking through how you will spend your time and your money:
If you have a ‘bucket list’, find out if your spouse has one too. Decide what you want to do together while you still can. It can be a great motivator to have someone pushing you to do the things you’ve always talked about doing.
