Maintaining Health and Vitality in Retirement

Aging gracefully doesn’t just happen. It is the result of intentional planning, remaining active and eating right.

For all their grand retirement plans, many people spend their days in a recliner, munching fattening snacks, structuring their day according to what’s on TV. What you might justify as ‘relaxation’ can actually increase stress and depression during retirement, as you gain weight and feel your energy levels deplete. Staying active, both physically and mentally, is one of the most important factors in a successful retirement.

Establish fitness targets every day. Start by walking a mile and you may find, over time you can run a mile, or even more! Eating right will give you the stamina to reach your goals. Talk to your doctor or consult a nutritionist about how to improve your diet or make small adjustments to increase your energy levels.

Simple activities like reading, completing word and number puzzles, or practicing fine motor skills can keep your mind active. Go a step further and look into lifelong learning - you’re never too old to pick up a new skill, or even master one.
