You’ve had a full career, focused on getting ahead and making the most of your time. Retirement may be the first chance you have to really focus on others. There is no formula for giving back—but the best approach is to start by thinking about what you love to do. Consider how you can use your skills to help a cause you believe in: lend your financial expertise to the board of a non-profit, indulge your love of baseball by coaching little league, show your culinary prowess at a soup kitchen, or deepen your love for language by tutoring new immigrants.
Volunteering can give you the same sense of purpose you valued in your career, but often a much higher level of gratification. Volunteering doesn’t bring the same stress you may have experienced at work, and usually, you reap rewards a lot sooner - through the simple gratitude from those you’ve helped.
