At 55, 60, or even 65, you might feel too young to worry about putting your affairs in order. But now is the time to ensure everything is in place. We aren’t invincible, and illness rarely gives warning. Ask yourself a few important questions:
You might assume your employer has everything in place, but it’s risky to take this for granted. It’s worth familiarizing yourself with your retirement benefits ahead of time, so you’re not caught off-guard when the unexpected hits.
Taking it a step further, find out what benefits your spouse or partner has. At this stage in life, many of us are on our second or third marriages. Make sure your money is willed to the right people. Too often, spouses and children from second marriages are inadvertently left out of a will, but are still required to pay estate tax. It never hurts to start planning now.
