When Bill Chambers was nineteen he thought he was invincible. Then he suffered a near-fatal motorcycle accident that forced him to redefine his goals. At twenty-two he began running and over the next twenty-five years ran more that a hundred long-distance races, collecting personal bests and memories that would last a lifetime.
Running helped Bill develop the discipline and strength that have been invaluable in both his personal and professional life. He learned that you don’t reach finish lines if you’re not willing to start, and the outcome depends on how you decide to approach a situation.
The ability not only to survive, but also to prosper in the new economy, demands a radical new approach because of increasingly sophisticated clients, changing work paradigms and intensified competition.
As a financial services salesperson, Bill began to realize that the principles upon which successful marathon running is based have a direct application to achieving goals in our personal life and career – specifically in the sales environment.
To date, Bill has run over 160 distance races. "I have a goal to run a marathon in all 50 states and thus far have completed 32 states. This year I have a personal goal to do two ultra (50 mile/80.5 km) marathons. I average a marathon about every five weeks."
"To me the goal is to complete the race; personal bests are always appreciated, but the challenge of the distance and crossing that finish line is really what counts."
Bill is the author of “Go the Distance” a book that applies the principles of marathon running – goal-setting, training, maintaining discipline and focus, and the ability to adapt to the ever-changing environment – to making strides towards all of life’s goals.
Although not all of us aspire to become marathoners, each of us can benefit from understanding the runner’s formula for achieving success.
